PIANIST AND CANCER
SURVIVOR TO MAKE 860 MILE RUN - CONCERTS TO BE HELD IN
ROUTE TO BENEFIT CANCER RESEARCH
CHICAGO— Martin Berkofsky has a lot to celebrate.
On April 9th, the internationally renowned pianist and music
scholar will begin an 860 mile run from Tulsa, Okla. to Arlington
Heights, Ill. in celebration of his 60th birthday and his
victory over cancer. Berkofsky, of Casonova, Vir., has performed
all over the globe, recorded with the London and Berlin Symphonies,
and appeared as co-director of the Long Island Chamber Ensemble.
He most recognized work is his discovery and restoration
of Max Bruch’s long-lost Concerto for Two Pianos and
Orchestra.
Martin successfully won his battle against cancer in 2000
after undergoing treatment at the Cancer Treatment Centers
of America at Southwestern Regional Medical Center (SRMC)
in Tulsa, Okla. “I returned from the center with a
new outlook on life,” says Martin. “I came back
with a conviction that caring works – it works at every
level. I returned with a commitment to help other cancer
patients.” Martin cites his treatment at SRMC as inspiration
for his journey.
Martin will kick off his travels with a Cancer Treatment
Research Foundation (CTRF) benefit concert on April 8th in
Tulsa. "The plan is to cover 10 miles a day, six days
a week," says Martin. He will perform at three major
concerts during his run:
- 7pm Tuesday, April 8
Cancer Treatment Centers of
America
CityPlex Towers at 81st & Lewis
Tulsa, Okla.
- 7:30pm Thursday, June 12
Moore Auditorium at Webster University
470 E. Lockwood Ave.
St. Louis, Mis.
- 7pm Thursday, August 14
Lutkin Memorial Hall, Northwestern University
700 University Place
Evanston, Ill.
“Thanks to the underwriting of operational expenses
by CTCA, 99 cents of every dollar donated to CTRF will go
directly to cancer research,” says Martin. He will
be raising funds at three main performances, as well as through
per-mile sponsorships from supporters.
Updates on Martin’s run can be found on www.cancercenter.com.
Donations will be requested at all appearances, and can be
made over the phone at 888.221.CTRF, or by visiting www.celebrateliferun.com.
Tickets are tax refundable and all proceeds will benefit
CTRF.

About CTRF
Cancer Treatment Research Foundation supports research for
the innovative use of conventional cancer therapies like
chemotherapy and radiation, as well as for the best science-based
complementary medicine. Because CTRF supports clinical
research that has already passed the test tube stage, the
foundation’s research findings create immediate treatment
options for patients. The goal is to accelerate the most
promising research from the laboratory to the bedside.
Unlike many not-for-profits, 99 cents of every dollar donated
to CTRF goes directly to cancer research. For additional
information on Cancer Treatment Research Foundation, visit
www.ctrf.org.
