THE FOLLOWING ARE REFLECTIONS FROM A CTCA/CTRF STAFF MEMBER WHO
CONTRIBUTED TO MARTIN'S CELEBRATE LIFE RUN:
?Do you want fries? How about a desert? Apple pie. Take two! I
want you to know that someone cares about you.?
These are Martin?s words to a homeless man whom he had never
seen before, and will likely never see again. As we stood in
line at McDonalds, approximately seven miles from our starting
point in downtown Chicago, it all became very clear to me what
the Celebrate Life Run is about; Listening, giving, and asking
little in return for the effort.
For over four months, I have been a small part of Martin?s
incredible journey. I must admit, there have been a few rocky
places. The notion of helping a man 400 miles away from my
office seemed a little far fetched in this world of ?Look out
for number one--dog eat dog--run over people before they run
over you.?
Martin taught me something yesterday--You can be as fierce in
your mission to give back to others as you are in your
professional career. It?s ok to take chances because if you
believe in yourself, you can do anything. Ambition means
nothing without commitment and resolve.
As I sat down a the end of the run, exhausted from the 11 miles
we traveled, I thought about the wonderful people that have
hosted Martin for four months. I thought about the places he
must have visited, people he must have spoken with, and small
concerts he probably played. I will never know every story
Martin has from these four months. But I?m proud to say that to
some small degree, I was with him every step of the way.
A special thanks goes to Scot Gallup, Joni Shulman, and Linda
Cody for your work on this event.
Also, thank you to my girlfriend Michelle for being our
chauffeur yesterday.
