Journal Entry:
On the road. Lake Forest: we ended up here tonight, following a
beautiful run through Evanston, Wilmette, Winnetka, Highland
Park, Fort Sheridan. Scott Hooson, the brother of Dan Hooson,
who spoke at our Northwestern University concert, lead the way
(top photo).
Scott is a marathon runner and wise teacher. How I wish that
all of the lessons he gave me today (relax those hands, swing
those arms, head up, heel before toe...) could have been
learned some four months ago! We passed the extraordinary Bahai
temple (middle photo), pausing briefly to visit and to take in
its messages of peace, the Ravinia Festival (bottom photo); but
best of all, a small Mexican restaurant where we stopped for
dinner--and after answering the proprietor's inquiry as to our
purpose of the day, were not allowed to pay for our repast. I
have experienced this generosity so many times while on this
journey. Scott understood it in its best meaning, "What a vast
resource of kindness we have in all people, who will open their
hearts when they understand that we are opening ours."
I have moved to new hosts, the Madziarczyks, just on the
northernmost border of Chicago. Tomorrow is a day off--enjoying
a block party with their neighbors.
