As a kid Martin was always interested
in gadgetry, and everything electric and electronic. Finally
in 1957 at age 14, he passed his first Amateur Radio license
examination, first as KN3HDW and later K3HDW. Since that
time Martin has been non-stop: trying to build
his own equipment and learning as much as possible about
radio communications and electronics. Martin pursued the
exotic
when he moved
to Turkey when he succeeded in establishing radio communication
by reflection signals from ionized meteor trails and ultimately
established two-way radio communication by reflecting signals
from the moon. This was the first time anyone had done this
from Turkey.
Equally important was the ethic of public service he learned
from ham radio operation, "We learned to be at the service
of others with our knowledge, skills, and equipment." This
ethic carried over into the rest of Martin's life as a permanent
impression.
Martin tells us
a wonderful story told by an Icelandic Radio Amateur friend
illustrating the total cross section of our hobby.
"King
Hussein of Jordan was a Radio Amateur and though he didn't
advertise
who he was, almost everyone recognized him by his call sign.
My Icelandic friend, not knowing whom he was speaking with
at first got into a vchat describing his profession, etc.,
and when he asked King Hussein what he did, the answer came
back: 'I'm King around here.'"
KC3RE, Martin Berkofsky, shall
be in contact during the entire course of
the Celebrate Life Run by VHF and UHF Amateur Radio. Radio
Amateurs along the route should
check for him on their local VHF and UHF repeater frequencies
as well as VHF and UHF simplex frequencies. K3BEQ, Murray
Green, will be the QSL Manager for the Celebrate Life
Run.
