On Thursday, June 12, cancer survivor and renowned
classical pianist Martin Berkofsky performed a benefit concert
at Webster University's Moore Auditorium in St. Louis, Missouri.
The evening's performance was free concert to benefit Cancer
Treatment Research Foundation (CTRF).
Unlike many not-for-profits, 99 cents of every dollar donated
to CTRF goes directly to cancer research.
Mr. Berkofsky performed flawless compositions by Franz
Liszt, Franz Schubert, Frederic Chopin, and a selection
from modern composer, Alan
Hovhaness. The audience displayed their enthusiasm for
the evening's performance by calling Martin back for an
encore. Berkofsky left the audience with memorable rendition
of John Phillip Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever.
In addition to his performance Martin stressed
the importance of supporting cancer research to which he
credits his own survival from cancer just a few years ago.
Dr. Timothy Fleming of Washington University
in St. Louis, gave a short presentation about his CTRF funded
research study on breast cancer.
St. Louis based insurance provider, Coulter & Company
generously underwrote the expenses of the performance.
Donations were raised by direct contributions made at the
event, music CDs and t-shirt sales, as well as a raffle
for a coupon good for 4 free tickets to a St. Louis Cardinals
baseball game. In all,
$1,270 was raised for cancer research.
